MP2040 ?f ast transient response, 3a very low dropout line ar regul a t o r MP2040 rev.1.0 www.monolithicpower.com 8 9/21/2010 mps proprietar y information. un a u t horized photoc op y and duplication prohibited. ? 2010 mps. all rights reserved. block diagram byp ass bias en gnd pgood o fb vout vin + -- + -- 0.5v 0.45v reference soft st ar t ga te turns off the gate -- + figure 1?block diagram of lo w dropout re gulator operation MP2040 th eory of ope r ation the mp204 0 linear dropout regulator provid es adjustable o u tput voltages from 0.9v to 3.3v at currents up to 3a. this ldo is prot ected again s t short circuit s , and it has thermal shut down protection w i th 15 o c hystheresis. utilizing t w o pow e r su pplies in order to maxi mize the efficien cy MP2040 uses two power supplie s. one power supply is connected t o the bias pin and it is used to pow er up the internal circuitr ies includ in g band gap reference a nd the rest of control circuitries. th e other power supply is connected to the vin pins which are t he drain of pass device . this powe r supply can be set clo s e to output voltage of ldo. the output pins are the source of the pa ss device. the smaller voltage drop across the pass device tran slates to th e smaller p o wer loss in pass device . thus, the part operates with highe r efficiency. internal current limit the MP2040 has an in ternal curre nt limit set at almost 3.8a. internal current limit is very well controlled o v er process variations and ambient temperature. enable the enable (en) pin is active high. the enable pin has a b u ilt-in hysth e resis. if th is pin is held below 0.8v then part sh uts down and draws less than 1ua from v bias sup p ly. if not used t hen connect this pin to v bias . under voltage lockout the bias voltage is monitored by a circuit that prevents the ldo start up when th e bias voltage is below 2.35v. this circuitry has an approximate hystheresis of 90mv.
MP2040 ?f ast transient response, 3a very low dropout line ar regul a t o r MP2040 rev.1.0 www.monolithicpower.com 9 9/21/2010 mps proprietar y information. un a u t horized photoc op y and duplication prohibited. ? 2010 mps. all rights reserved. soft start MP2040 incorporates in ternal soft start function . this internal function reduces the sta r t up current surge into t he output capacitor. th is allows th e gradual built up of outp u t voltage t o its f i nal set value. the internal soft start cap is held to grou nd if there is a fault condition. the fault condition s are uvlo, thermal shut down, an d disable . t h e internal soft start time is almost 280 pow e r good the power good pin is an open dra i n output an d can be connected to bias voltage via a pull u p resistor. op en drain tra n sistor turn s off and pg pin voltage value becomes v bia s when v fb exceeds 450mv. also pg pin can sink at le a s t 230 a while being low. setting the output voltage the mp204 0 has an a d justable o u tput voltage, set by using a resistive voltage di vider from t he output voltage to fb pin. the voltage divider divides the output voltage down to the feedback voltage by t he ratio: v fb = v out x r 2 / (r 1 +r 2 ) where v fb is the feedback threshold voltage (v fb =0.5v), and v out is the out pu t voltage. r 1 connects between v out and v fb , an d r 2 connects between v fb and ground. thus the out put voltage is: v out = 0.5 x (r 1 +r 2 )/r 2 r 2 can be a s high a s 1 00k ? , but a typical valu e is 10k ? . using that value, r 1 is dete r mined by: r 1 =r 2 x (v ou t -v fb )/v fb for exampl e, for a 1. 8v output voltage, r 2 is 10k ? , and r 1 is 26k ? . you can select 26k ? (1%) resistor for r 1 . pow e r diss ipation most of the power dissipation is d ue to power dissipation in pass device. for examp l e, assum e v bias =5.0v, v in =2.0v, v ou t =1.8v, an d i out =3a: p d ( pass ) = (v in -v out ) x i out p d ( pass ) = (2.0v-1.8v) x 3a=0.6w p bias = v bi as x i gnd = 5v x (220a) = 1.25mw. this is ne gligible compared to p d ( pass ) =0.6w for qfn 3 x 3 ja is 50 o c/ w . 0.6w power is dissipate d when 3a output current goes through pass de vice with v in =2.0v, and v out =1.8v. this g i ves a rise in die temperature for 0.6 x 50 o c/w=30 o cthis is a safe op erating point assuming a junction te mperature of 135 o c a t an 85 o c ambient temperature. a heat sin k needs to be utilized for a bett e r temperature performance.
MP2040 ?f ast transient response, 3a very low dropout line ar regul a t o r MP2040 rev.1.0 www.monolithicpower.com 10 9/21/2010 mps proprietar y information. un a u t horized photoc op y and duplication prohibited. ? 2010 mps. all rights reserved. appli c ation information pg the power good pin is an open d r ain output a pull up resistor (100k ? recommen ded). the p u ll up resistor can be t i ed to a supply within the voltage range of the pin (0 to 5.5v). for example , the pull up resistor can be tied to the inp ut voltage that is monitore d by an ic powered fro m this in put voltage. if th e output vo ltage is 10 % below its re gulation po int, the pg pin become s low. by pass capacitors for lower noise, the re ference voltage can be bypassed by an e x tern al capacitor . a low esr capacitor, such as the ceramic type, will provide the best perf o rmance. it also can f unction as an external soft start, th e soft start tim e; tss=1000 x c bp performanc e transient response for a 3a tra n sient respo n se, suggests increasin g the input capacitance should be increased t o 22f or hig her to get better performance. this will also av oid glitche s on the pg pin due to excessive u ndershoot. also in crea se the inpu t voltage 0.4v above the v out , to i m prove the lo ad transient response. maximum output voltage and load current if the v out is set to 3.3v then t he ma ximu m output current will be decreased to 2.5a. the maxi mum bias voltage limits the v out . v out mus t be at least 2 . 5v less tha n v b ; v out =v b -2. 5 v bias input voltage the bias input is d esigned fo r low drop application . the bias pin must be at least 3.3v, and at least 2.5v higher than the ou tput voltage. if the v in supply voltage meets t hese requirements, the bias p i n can be tie d to v in .
